One of the biggest benefits of installing new Windows and Doors is the increased comfort and energy bill savings you’ll enjoy both winter and summer. Quality design and construction put an end to air and water infiltration. You can also choose glass options that offer additional benefits. For instance, double-paned insulated glass offers excellent U- value and reduces sound when compared to ordinary single-pane glass. And our standard insulated glass is covered by a 10-year warranty. Emerald also offers heat-reducing tints and high-performance low-E coatings that reduce solar heat gain while protecting your furnishings, draperies and artwork from fading. They’re particularly beneficial for western and southern exposures.
Comparing Glass Options for PGT Aluminum Windows and Doors
In considering glass options, it’s valuable to compare how various options affect solar heat gain and visible light transmittance. Reducing solar heat gain can save on air conditioning bills. Reducing visible light transmittance — that is the brightness of the daylight entering a home — may or may not be a desired effect.

Glass must meet a Visible Light Transmittance of .45 or less.

Performance numbers based on 1/2" IG unit (2 pieces of 1/8" glass and 1/4" air space).

U-Value When a home is primarily heated, the U-Value (heat flow out of the home) is the correct rating to inquire about. The smaller the number, the better.

Solar Heat Gain When a home is primarily air-conditioned, the Solar Heat Gain value (heat flow into the home) is the correct rating to inquire about. The smaller the number, the better.

Visible Light Transmittance is the percentage of light that passes through a window. The higher the number, the brighter.

UV Light Transmittance is the percentage of invisible, harmful ultraviolet light that passes through a window. The lower the number, the better.
